As any addict well knows, there is a stigma associated with addiction that portrays the abuse as a weakness, one that could beAddiction overcome if the addict really wanted to. Such is not the case since brain scans show that critical thinking areas are physically altered in the mind of an addict. Loss of memory, lack of behavior control, and irrational decision-making are all parts of the brain that change because of addiction.

    Changes In The Brain

Now that researchers with brain imaging equipment can literally see the changes in a brain, it is easier to explain why an addict continues on a course of self-destruction. Researchers have proven that biology plays a role in whether or not a person becomes addicted after exposure to drugs or alcohol. Other key elements common in addicts are trauma during their childhood, their social environment, and whether there are any other mental issues involved.

    Addiction

Once we understand this, it is clear to see that the person with an addiction has a disease, and needs help. Yet addiction experts point out that in the United States, less than ten percent of those who need treatment ever receive it. Unfortunately, the percentage that recover on their own is even lower.
